We’re seeing the next evolution of personalized AI recommendations reshape how we think of bespoke beauty recommendations: it’s no longer a base assessment of skin type, age, and general skin concerns, but a hyper-specific, intuitive, and ever-changing personal AI assistant drawing from numerous intersecting data points. The next evolution of algorithmic beauty recommendations will not only incorporate the expected biomarkers like age, lifestyle, health conditions, etc, but also diverse, intersecting factors like location, climate, season, pollution, daily schedule, stress/sleep/exercise responses from fit-tech wearables, etc. In addition to simply pulling on a larger and more complex map of data, AI algorithms will become both proactive and intuitive in its recommendations.


This means algorithms that will remember past patterns, results, and data points, and will layer this data over environmental, lifestyle, and health data to give expert recommendations for products that are hyper-specific. Imagine a custom serum device, for example, powered by AI and paired with an app, that knows you’re just returned from a trip, which it can tell not only from your linked schedule and flight tickets but also from your health watch which shows high cortisol, poor sleep, and dehydration. The device also takes into account the fact that past behavior has shown that you don’t tend to follow through with extensive routines after long haul flights. The device is able to process all of this information within seconds and suggest, mix, and dispense a custom serum to boost glow, increase hydration, and fight fatigue, all with ingredients that it knows won’t irritate your skin. This same tech potential can also be translated to color cosmetics, hair, nails, etc. – as beauty tech and AI algorithms become more advanced and accessible, elaborate, confusing routines will be clarified through technology that is able to process vast amounts of information and suggest optimal solutions.

AR Try-On Apps

Amidst a dynamic and oversaturated ecommerce landscape, virtual trials are key to helping consumers commit to a product without experiencing it first hand. We’ve seen promising updates to virtual shade try-ons across color cosmetics, hair, and nails over the past five years as filter technology becomes more sophisticated, thanks partially to hyper-realistic TikTok and Instagram filters that are almost undetectable and adapt intuitively to changes in light or position of the face.


What we’re seeing now, however, is a step beyond simply showing what a shade will look like, but showing the tactile reality of formulations. We know that consumers are looking to User-Generated Content (UGC) to see video first impressions for products they’re considering purchasing, but virtual try-ons have an amazing opportunity to see how a formula performs, blends, and absorbs without ever touching a physical product. AR-driven virtual trials are another opportunity for consumers to interact with and learn about a product digitally, creating a stronger likelihood of satisfaction and potential repurchase.

Beauty-Tech Integration

The concept of tech as being antithetical to a traditional holistic wellness experience is swiftly shifting. Whereas a decade ago most beauty tech was still impractical, inaccessible, uni-tasking, and sometimes gimmicky, now tech is focused, practical, multifunctional, smaller, and more accessible. Moreover, as the longevity obsession increasingly turns traditional relaxation-driven wellness spas into results-driven med-spa clinics, we see beauty tech embraced by consumers as a way to optimize and amplify results. LED masks, microcurrent and temperature massaging devices, biohacking data systems, and health/fitness trackers tech are the norm now among beauty-focused consumers, and the next shift will be innovations that prove tech’s place within softer self-care routines. Whether it’s algorithm-driven scent and soundscapes, apps that create unique wellness routines, beauty tech devices that boost the benefits of traditional soothing services, or diagnostic wellness tech, we’re seeing a need for beauty tech that is aesthetically and functionally designed for a more holistic purpose.

APAC countries like Korea, Japan, and China have been integrating tech into beauty and personal care routines for decades: for these consumers, the incorporation of tech is not a novelty gimmick, but an expected value and efficiency boost. This has driven diverse innovation across market categories, which has in turn increased accessibility and affordability of tech solutions, and therefore, created an expectation of a certain degree of innovation and quality. Within this market, we see tech integration not only materialize through stand-alone beauty tech itself, but also through packaging solutions to maximize benefits, as topical products are frequently paired with LED, microcurrent, and temperature therapy devices within the packaging itself to seamlessly amplify the benefits of topical formulations.


Korean beauty in particular has become a global focus for beauty innovation because Korean consumers are incredibly discerning when it comes to beauty, and expect frequent noteworthy innovations. There’s also a certain expectation of quality, safety, and standards within Korea that pushes brands to pursue a high degree of excellence and efficacy. Currently, Korea is experimenting with AI-integration for trend-driven, personalized recommendations like a consumer’s personal color season, while behind the scenes brands are leveraging AI to create new formulations and identify unique ingredient solutions.
