ABSTRACT: This opinion piece examines the gradual decline of scientific integrity not as an abrupt failure but as a response to shifting commercial, cultural, and technological forces. It identifies misinformation, diminished scientific rigour, and accelerated product launches as symptoms of broader value distortions driven by globalisation, finance, and social media. The article contends that science has not been abandoned but has been increasingly reframed—from a guiding principle to a marketing tool—through linguistic ambiguity, rushed communication, and the sidelining of technical expertise in decision-making. It highlights how rational decisions made under skewed incentives have collectively eroded trust, authority, and institutional knowledge. Ultimately, it advocates a conscious realignment of industry values to restore the authority of expertise, redefine success beyond speed and scale, and treat scientific integrity as vital long-term capital crucial for credibility, resilience, and self-respect.

In periods of wider global uncertainty, industries often reveal their underlying values with unusual clarity. The cosmetics sector is no exception. What we see today—misinformation, hollow or exaggerated claims, diminishing scientific depth, and an accelerating rush to market despite legislative frameworks—is often discussed as a set of discrete failures. Yet these are better understood as symptoms. The more difficult and necessary task is to examine the causes beneath them and to ask when and why they first took hold.


The industry did not abruptly abandon scientific integrity; it gradually redefined its role. This shift can be traced back to the late 1990s and early 2000s, when globalisation and outsourcing transformed cosmetics from a predominantly craft and expertise-led field into a scalable commercial enterprise. As multinational expansion and financial consolidation accelerated, success increasingly came to be measured by growth, reach, and efficiency. Within this emerging model, science—methodical, slow, and resistant to simplification—struggled to coexist with shortened development timelines and aggressive launch cycles. Integrity was not rejected, but it was increasingly required to fit within commercial constraints.


By the 2010s, this tension intensified as social media reshaped how information was consumed and rewarded. Platforms privileged immediacy, confidence, and emotional resonance over nuance or qualification. In this compressed environment, scientific truth—conditional by nature—proved difficult to communicate. The industry adapted accordingly. Claims were simplified, uncertainty smoothed over, and complexity reframed as unnecessary friction. What had once been built on evidence began to be won through attention. The medium did not merely change the message; it subtly altered the standards by which credibility itself was judged.


At the same time, the internal balance of authority within organisations shifted. Scientific, regulatory, and technical expertise, once central to decision-making, became increasingly peripheral. These disciplines remained, but their role evolved from guiding strategy to validating outcomes already determined by commercial priorities. Expertise, which naturally slows processes through questioning and verification, came to be seen less as a foundation and more as a hurdle. Knowledge was no longer something to defer to but something to manage.


This structural change was mirrored in the language of science itself. Over time, scientific terminology drifted from precision toward suggestion. Terms such as “clinically proven,” “science-backed,” or “dermatologist-tested” became aesthetic markers rather than methodological commitments. This linguistic shift did not require overt dishonesty to flourish; it relied on ambiguity. Regulation, designed to police explicit falsehoods, struggled to keep pace with implication, inference, and carefully engineered vagueness. Science was not abandoned—it was aestheticised.


The period following 2020 further accelerated these trends. Global disruption, heightened competition, and a pervasive sense of urgency normalised shortcuts that might previously have been resisted. Speed became synonymous with relevance, and hesitation with failure. In such a climate, long-term trust was easily sacrificed for short-term visibility. Each compromise appeared justifiable in isolation, yet collectively, they reshaped the industry's moral architecture.


It would be convenient to attribute these developments entirely to external pressures—such as markets, platforms, or consumers. But that explanation is incomplete. Many of these choices were rational responses to prevailing incentives, and therein lies the deeper discomfort. The industry did not lose the plot through negligence; it lost it through adaptation. The cumulative effect of reasonable decisions, made within a distorted value system, produced an outcome that now feels deeply unreasonable.


This brings us to a more philosophical question. In prioritising speed, scale, and competitive advantage, has the industry been selfish—or selfish towards itself? The erosion of scientific integrity does not only mislead consumers; it diminishes the value of expertise, undermines professional pride, and weakens collective credibility. When trust becomes fragile, it is not only those making empty claims who suffer, but also those committed to doing things properly. Mediocrity, once normalised, does not discriminate.


An industry that treats science as a marketing instrument rather than a truth-seeking discipline risks hollowing itself out. What begins as a strategy for survival can quietly become self-sabotage. Trust, unlike attention, cannot be scaled quickly, and once lost, it is slow to rebuild. The short-term gains of velocity are offset by long-term fragility.

These tensions are not new, nor are they inherently problematic. What is problematic is the refusal to acknowledge them. An industry willing to trade depth for momentum may win the moment, but it risks losing something far harder to recover: credibility, memory, and meaning. And in that loss, it serves neither the consumer nor itself.

Symptoms and their causes

Symptom 1: The Capitalisation of Beauty

Cause: Capital came to value velocity over veracity.


At some point, cosmetics ceased to be primarily about making good products and became about making scalable stories. As private equity, venture capital, and growth-at-all-costs models entered beauty in force, success became defined by speed to launch, narrative strength over substance, and short-term valuation rather than long-term trust. Scientific integrity does not scale quickly. Marketing does. Once return-on-investment timelines shrank, depth became a liability. Clinical data takes time; a claim takes a headline.


Symptom 2: The Social Media Compression of Truth

Cause: The medium reshaped the message—and eventually the science itself.


Truth was once something you built. Now it is something you win attention with. Platforms reward simplicity over nuance, certainty over doubt, and emotion over evidence. Science, by nature, is slow, conditional, and uncomfortable with absolutes. Algorithms are not. The industry adapted—not by educating better, but by simplifying until meaning was lost. Claims became slogans. Data became vibes.


Symptom 3: The Professional Erosion of Expertise

Cause: Knowledge was reframed as a bottleneck rather than a foundation.


Formulation, regulatory, clinical, and toxicological expertise once held real authority. Over time, those voices were outsourced, minimised, or asked to “make it work” rather than “tell the truth.” Expertise became something you referenced rather than something you deferred to. This shift did not stem from indifference; it arose because expertise slows things down, and slowing down became unacceptable.


Symptom 4: The Shift in Scientific Language

Cause: Science was aestheticised before it was abandoned.


Rather than discarding science entirely, the industry rebranded it. As scientific language became a marketing element, it lost its reliability. Regulation struggled to respond because these terms became ambiguous, elastic, and difficult to define.

When did this begin?

Globalisation, digital platforms, investor pressure, and accelerated innovation are not temporary disruptions; they are the environment. The question, then, is not whether the industry can go back, but whether it can relearn to stand still long enough to remember what it is doing.


Rebalancing does not begin with better claims, tighter wording, or more sophisticated marketing. It begins with restoring the authority of expertise where it belongs—not as a decorative endorsement, but as a governing force. This requires organisations to tolerate friction again: slower timelines, inconvenient data, unanswered questions, and the discomfort of saying “not yet” or “we don’t know.” These are not inefficiencies; they are the visible cost of integrity.


Equally, it requires reframing success. An industry that measures achievement solely by speed, reach, and valuation will continue to externalise its costs—onto consumers, professionals, and its own future credibility. Long-term trust, institutional memory, and scientific depth are not soft values; they are forms of capital that compound slowly and collapse suddenly when neglected. To rebuild them, leadership must be willing to accept outcomes that are less spectacular in the short term but more defensible over time.


There is also an educational responsibility ahead. Not to “simplify science” further, but to resist the false premise that complexity is incompatible with engagement. The challenge is not that consumers cannot understand nuance; it is that the industry has underestimated their capacity—and overestimated the sustainability of spectacle. Treating the public as capable of uncertainty, trade-offs, and gradual progress is not elitist; it is respectful.


None of this can be achieved through regulation alone. Regulation can set boundaries, but it cannot restore values. Nor can individual actors fix a systemic distortion in isolation. What is required is a collective recalibration—across brands, laboratories, agencies, investors, and institutions—of what is rewarded, amplified, and defended. Cultural shifts do not begin with consensus; they begin when enough people refuse to keep calling compromise “innovation.”


The cosmetics industry does not need more science in appearance. It needs more science in function, governance, and consequence. It needs fewer stories about certainty and more structures that can withstand doubt. Above all, it needs memory: of why standards existed, of what expertise is for, and of what is lost when credibility is treated as expendable.


What comes next, then, is not a revolution, but a reckoning. A choice between continuing to adapt unquestioningly to distorted incentives—or consciously reshaping them. The industry will continue to evolve either way. The only open question is whether it will do so with depth, responsibility, and self-respect—or whether it will keep mistaking motion for progress.


Without memory, integrity does not merely fade. It is replaced—quietly, efficiently, and convincingly—by repetition.
